We have this one funky smelling spot on our carpet.
You know what I’m talking about. It’s the spot that always gets a cup of water spilled on it. You’d think we would all learn not to place a cup of water in the EXACT. SAME. SPOT, but alas, we don’t.
And that one spot on our carpet (which happens to be right by the most coveted seat on the couch) gets more abuse than it should.
Spill after spill after spill of water has led to a moldy smell. Each time it happens, it gets moldier. We should probably disperse the carpet abuse equally, ya’ know, to make it fair. Equal carpet rights or somethin’.
Because I don’t particularly like my house smelling moldy, and because I like to avoid chemicals as much as possible, my solution need to be a deodorizer that was natural.
Enter Essential Oils.
About 2 years ago, I bought a starter kit of essential oils and although I didn’t really understand a lot about essential oils at first, over the years I’ve found some great uses for the essential oils! Essential oils are like concentrated super-powered plants. They can be used aromatically, topically, & even internally. They can be used for cleaning and supporting the body.
My recipe today is one of my faves when it comes to essential oils. I can clean, deodorize, AND get some wonderful aromatic goodness in my house. It’s the best of all three worlds! So without further adieu, let’s get to my recipe!
Homemade Carpet Deodorizer {with essential oils}
My recipe is incredibly simple! All you need are two ingredients:
- Baking Soda (click here to buy)
- The Cleansing Blend. The cleansing blend is a blend of the essential oils lemon, lime, pine, citronella, melaleuca, and cilantro.
Learn more about my favorite brand of essential oils.
STEP 1) Add 5 drops of the Cleansing blend to 1 cup of Baking Soda. Mix well with a fork.
STEP 2) Sprinkle over your carpet. You can put a lot in a particularly smelly area, or just sprinkle over your entire carpet for a great spring cleaning carpet freshener!
STEP 3) Use your hand to rub all of the baking soda in so it can really get deep into the carpet.
STEP 4) Leave it there for 1 day-1 week, then vacuum it up when you’re ready! Your house & carpet will smell amazing!

I’ve mixed something similar with deodorizing and anti-mites effect for my mattress. I just added peppermint and some other kind (i forgot it) essential oil and it did well. I love the idea of using essential oils in home cleaning products. I’m definitely trying your recipe right this weekend!

Hi DaNell –
Do you have a recipe for flea control for my carpets? I’ve been using ordinary salt, but it’s not working as well as in the past…
Thanks in advance –

Yes! My favorite brand has an essential oil blend called TerraShield. It would be perfect for what you’re looking for, you could just replace the peppermint in this recipe with TerraShield!

for flea control use human grade diatomateous earth instead of baking soda, it is harmless to animals and people. It kills any kind of bugs including bedbugs

My friend has a cleaning business and I just asked him about getting rid of funky smells and stains in the carpet. He mentioned using baking soda and essential oils. Thanks for giving me a recipe and some direction – I can’t wait to get rid of the spot in my office – it has actually become stiff, ugh!

Just a side note gained from personal experience…if you leave baking soda sitting on top of your carpet for too long it will bleach the carpet. I have beige carpet but I now have much lighter shaded spots (some rather large) of carpet where I had sprinkled baking soda to clean stains and left to sit overnight. When I vacuumed it up I was left with bleached carpet. So…I still use baking soda to clean and deodorize my carpet but it gets vacuumed up right away. Possibly rubbing it in like you suggest would solve this problem but I did just want to warn folks so no one ends up with spotted carpet like mine.☺️ Btw found you from the blog hop…welcome aboard.
