Don’t be surprised if your kids go crazy over this homemade chocolate syrup recipe!
Admit it: When you were a kid, you used to sneak a swig of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup when Mom wasn’t looking.
Oh, you’re saying that was just me?
Liar.
Well, whether or not you are ready to confess, I think we can all agree that chocolate milk is was a childhood favorite. It was the best. Of course, the problem with store bought chocolate syrup is it contains some not-too-pretty ingredients. As in horrible ingredients that will mess with your body.
Ingredients in HERSHEY’S CHOCOLATE SYRUP: HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP; CORN SYRUP; WATER; COCOA; SUGAR; CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVATIVE); SALT; MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES; XANTHAN GUM; POLYSORBATE 60; VANILLIN, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR
Gross.
Oh, but wait! Hershey’s just came out with a sugar-free option. So now you can be totes healthy, n’ all that.
Ingredients in HERSHEY’S SUGAR-FREE CHOCOLATE SYRUP: WATER; COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI; ERYTHRITOL; GLYCERIN; CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: SODIUM ACID SULFATE; NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR; XANTHAN GUM; SALT; POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVATIVE); SODIUM BENZOA TE (PRESERVATIVE); ACESULFAME POTASSIUM; SUCRALOSE; ZINC SULFATE; VITAMIN E ACETATE; NIACINAMIDE; CARAMEL COLOR; BIOTIN
Double gross, with an extra dose of chemicals.
Just make this simple homemade chocolate syrup recipe already!
Don’t torture yourself with the fake stuff. This simple, real food recipe contains just three ingredients. THREE. Each of them are whole and are ingredients your body can recognize.
Instead of sugar, I use honey in this delicious syrup. If you want to get all super-technical on me, then yes, I’ll admit that honey is still a sweetener. But in my opinion, honey (especially raw unfiltered honey) is a great source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. There’s also a good dose of enzymes and pollen to build your resistance to local allergens. That’s what I call a real food. It’s been used for thousands of years, and you can read more about honey here.
It’s up to you on how much of this chocolate syrup you choose to put in your milk. I allow my kids to choose for themselves because I believe in letting them use their intuition when it comes to food. Yes, in the beginning they added a ridiculous amount. But now they know that 1 teaspoon or so is perfect.

Thats amazing DaNelle! With all the honey in it I was like “Thats a lot of honey!” But in the end its wonderful!
Bridgett says
Thank you for this delicious recipe! The only sweetener my son can have is honey and he was missing chocolate milk. The whole family loves this one!
Wendy says
I can’t seem to see the actual recipe and would love to try this. My son has a corn allergy. Can you send me the recipe?
Holly says
This was amazing. My husband was recently diagnosed with Lyme so we took out ALL sugar and replaced it with raw honey and some pure maple syrup. He was so excited when I made him his favorite vanilla ice cream (with honey) and pulled this out. My kids love it too in their milk! Thank you so much!
Diana says
Hi Holly,
How is honey and maple syrup better than sugar?

This was my second batch I made.
My husband and I make veggie shakes every day and this makes veggies taste great 🙂
Thanx for the recipe.

My boys love it! I used a washed out squeeze honey bottle, so it can squirt easily – right from the fridge. Thanks for making healthy so easy & yummy!

LOVE!

Yum!! I went straight to my kitchen when I saw this recipe and made it 🙂 So yummy!! So easy!! Thank you!! I added it into some unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it was perfect 🙂

I so appreciate this. I have been making my own chocolate syrup after moving away from Trader Joe’s and their version. We LOVE chocolate milk–maybe a little too much. lol. But my homemade version has always used granulated sugar. I am moving us to eating ONLY honey and maple syrup (and any other foods that are ancient), but did not want to heat raw honey to make my version. Thanks for a truly raw chocolate milk recipe!

Mine has never crystallized in the fridge!
Anna says
Honey crystallizes in the refrigerator. Doesn’t it do that with this? I would love to do this since we have honeybees. Right now I use 2 parts maple syrup, 1 part cocoa. It’s delicious that way too! I don’t miss Hersheys, and we just pour our homemade in our old syrup squirt bottle.
Becky says
Thanks for the reply – I didn’t think about the water maybe causing issues if it’s not refrigerated.
Sarah says
Could you freeze this in mason jars??
DaNelle Wolford says
I haven’t tried that, but if you do, be sure to leave plenty of room at the top of the jar for the syrup to expand.
Becky says
I’m wondering why this would need to be refrigerated?
DaNelle Wolford says
Hi Becky, it helps thicken it and the water/honey combo can grow bacteria or mold depending on the humidity where you live:)
Diane C. says
Hello, I was wondering if you have to refrigerate this to help it thicken and the water/honey combo can grow bacteria or mold then why not just leave out the water?
DaNelle Wolford says
You can do that if you want, but the water thins it out:)
Carly says
My fiance likes to use peppermint mocha Coffee-mate (gross) so I made a batch of this and added peppermint extract to use in our coffee instead. I don’t have a food processor, so I just used warm water to make the mixing process easier. Tastes great!
stephanie says
If I use raw honey do I need to heat it down to a syrup texture?
DaNelle Wolford says
You could melt on a very low temp if you want, but it’ll take longer:)
Sana says
I didn’t expect this fantastic result, very tasty and healthy. thank you for sharing

I have been looking for a wholesome chocolate syrup recipe. It is one of my daughter’s favorite things. Thank you!
DaNelle Wolford says
You’re welcome!
Donna says
I use honey regularly as a sweetener. But I would have never thought to use it to make chocolate syrup. I thought the flavor of honey might be overpowering and that my grandson might think it tasted weird. It’s delicious and a hit with everyone. Thanks for the great recipe! I love your blog!
DaNelle Wolford says
Thanks Donna!

Meant to say maple syrup…
Brandon Sloterbeek says
A great and tasty substitute is to use real maple sugar. Depends on what you have most available if you area or it can be too expensive. But we process our own from our own maple trees and the chocolate syrup is a family favorite we make.
