Today I became “that Mom” you guys. I actually made homemade fruit snacks.
Fruit snacks have been a thing of the past over here on the homestead. They’re like a long lost friend, one that was bad enough that we needed to leave it behind, but yummy enough that we wish we could still be BFF’s.
I decided it was time to make some good ‘ol fashioned fruit snacks just like our great-grandma did. Or did she? Well, either way these things were delish and BONUS, they provide some awesome nutrients like grass-fed gelatin, which provides the body with a complete protein and even aids with digestion too!
Recipe below, yo…
Homemade Fruit Snacks
4 c. strawberries
1/2 c. lemon juice
8 TBS. honey
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
6 TBS. gelatin, found here.
Directions:
1. In a saucepan, heat strawberries and moosh (yes, I said moosh) while cooking.
2. Once all mooshed, add lemon juice, honey, salt & vanilla.
3. Slowly,(and I mean slowly) add the gelatin so it doesn’t clump. Cook an additional 2 minutes then pour into a glass pan and set in the fridge for 30 minutes.
4. Use a pizza cutter, or a cuter one such as this to create your fruit snacks.
5. Enjoy!

it’s not that I don’t like strawberries but I don’t like the seeds in the jello.

This looks delicious and healthy. Perfect for my kids who love to eat fruits.

I dont mean to reply to your comment but I wanted to comment in general (cant figure it out!) Anywho, these are fantastic. I recommend using a kitchen scale to weigh out the honey for less mess and less scraping. Just put an oven mitt over your kitchen scale and weigh out 168 mL of honey. Making it for my picky toddler. Hoping he will eat these and I made sure to use grassfed organic gelatin which is super healthy and collagen packed 🙂 it did clump despite pouring it very slowly. Poured it over the course of 8 mins, it’s in fridge now, setting. I hope the little clumps dont interfere too much. It smells delicious regardless though!

I made this and found that raspberrys are the best to make with. Also I put a line of parshment paper in the bottom of the tray before poring the mix in and pulling the whole thing out once it’s done to cut it and it worked like magic, the longer you leave it in the fridge to set the better.

I just made these yesterday. Instead of making with 4 cups of strawberries, I cut all ingredients in half and also substituted the honey for maple syrup. Delicious! I poured the gelatin in a gummy bear silicon mold. A new favorite snack of mine!!
Lorraine says
These gummies were great, thanks for sharing! I strained the strawberry seeds out into a large glass measuring cups and poured the liquid into some adorable silicone molds made by Silikomart. My kids are loving them!

I don’t understand.. Shouldn’t there be water in the ingredients somewhere for the gelatin, or is this just supposed to be understood?

Can I use frozen strawberries?
DaNelle Wolford says
Sure!
Theresa says
Question: Has anyone tried dehydrating these? Perhaps not all the way down, but partially?
Sparkina says
If one is a vegetarian, what can substitute for the gelatin? Would agar/kanten powder or konjac powder work?
Nicole says
What size pan did you use? 8×8? 9×13 seems too big but I wanted to double check 🙂

This recipe looks great! Any idea how long these would last if sealed tightly and refrigerated or frozen? I’m traveling next month and want to start making travel snacks ahead, but that obviously won’t help if they all go bad on me.
Keri says
I would like to know this as well! 🙂 We are traveling next week and so I want to start now! Kristen, I assume that these would be fine in the fridge and/or freezer!
DaNelle Wolford says
In the fridge, mine have lasted about 2-3 weeks, but I haven’t tried freezing them yet.

How much liquid is needed if I decide to use juice and not the 4 cups of berries?
DaNelle Wolford says
If you’re using juice, I would omit the water completely.
Randi says
I dont see in the recipe where it even calls for water? Am I missing something?
DaNelle Wolford says
No water needed! The strawberries and lemon juice put off enough liquid:)

I made a batch last week using my immersion blender to make sure there weren’t any clumps of gelatin. This created a frothy texture, however, which resulted in an odd final product with lots of air bubbles. If I don’t use the immersion blender, do you think they would turn out chewier, which is what my children would prefer?
Rochelle L. E. says
I think if you add the gelatin to the lemon juice and then add that to the fruit mixture, it is much easier to incorporate and there is way less clumping. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

I finally made these fruit snacks. It is so nice to know that there is health in every bit.

Do you think you could use maple syrup instead of honey?

Amélie says
Definitely, 3/4 cup of honey has the same sweetening potential as 1 cup of maple syrup as syrup has more water. You may cook just a bit longer to evaporate the excess of water.

I made this with cherries and it was divine. Can’t stop eating it!
Cary Hayes says
I’m getting 16 pounds of cherries this weekend. Do you think I could substitute the cherries for the strawberries?
DaNelle Wolford says
Yes, I think they’d be delicious!

An immersion blender is perfect for mooshing! I didn’t refrigerate mine, but they do need to be in an air-tight container. Of course, they didn’t last long enough to go bad. 😉
